Who we are

The East Coast Paddlers are a diverse group of people in the Mid-Michigan area drawn together by our interest in kayaking of all kinds.

We meet on the first Thursday of every month at 6:30 PM at the Gander Mountain store at 2270 Tittabawassee Rd, Saginaw, Michigan [Map], near Fashion Square Mall.

We welcome new members or just visitors, experienced or novice.

Wednesday Night Paddle - Change of Location

Launch Site Change for 8/6/08 ( Wednesday Nite):
Due to unfavorable conditions at the Miller Rd. launch site, we are moving the launch site to CENTER Rd.:
From Miller Rd. @ Gratiot/ M-46 go approximately (3) miles EAST on Gratiot/ M-46 to Center Rd.
Head south on Center Rd. to the Tittabawassee River. At the bridge turn right into the large parking lot and the launch site.

New Meeting Location!

Our meeting location has changed — starting with the May 1 meeting we will be at the Gander Mountain store at 2270 Tittabawassee Rd, Saginaw [Map], near Fashion Square Mall. Meeting time is still 6:30 PM. We're grateful to Dive and Glide for hosting us all these years but our meetings have outgrown their store and they need the space for their classes.

Spend Memorial Day weekend up north. Stay at Cathy and George Granlund’s place nestled in the north woods and enjoy paddling Traverse Bay on Saturday and the winding Betsie River on Sunday. We’re also close to miles and miles of quiet secondary roads if you’d like to bicycle rather than paddle. Or you can hike for miles out of the back door. Read more…

Missouri Breaks, Aug. 20-25, 2008

The 149-mile Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River flows through the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. The land and the rugged, surrounding Montana uplands (commonly called the Missouri Breaks) are defined in part by their history. The entire region was the homeland and lifeblood of American Indians. The river served as the pathway for Lewis and Clark, then the waterway for steamboats and a drawing card for fur trappers and traders. Read more…


Cooke Pond, May 16-17, 2008

There is a trip planned for May 16 and 17 to Cooke Pond (backwaters of the Au Sable). Camping from the kayak is planned- the site reserved is not accessible by car. Please plan on cold water and cool nights. Contact Jack at sayitagain7@hotmail.com for more information. Space is limited to 10; if more than that are interested, another site will need to be reserved.

Dressing for Cold - REI Clinic

Despite foggy weather, 13 members of ECPs took advantage of the free cold weather-paddling clinic offered by the REI store in Northville on December 2, 2007. The clinic was geared toward educating paddlers just beginning to paddle in winter weather.

Michigan in January, February, and March can be a beautiful time to paddle. Crowds on the river are gone, wildlife is more prevalent, and the scenery covered in snow and ice can be spectacular. Paddling when the temperature is below freezing can also be dangerous, even for seasoned paddlers. Kayakers need to dress not only for the temperature of the air, but also be prepared in case they tip. Read more…
